What is Graft versus Host Disease?
After receiving a stem cell transplant from a donor, which is called an allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, the most serious issue you might face is called graft-versus-host disease, or GVHD for short. Here's what happens: The new immune cells from the donor, specifically the T cells, can see your body's own tissues as strangers and start attacking them.

Tips for Taking Your Immunosuppressive Medication Safely

Stick to Your Schedule: It's important to take your medicine
exactly as prescribed, at the same times every day. -
Water is Best: Drink your medication with a full glass of water.
It's better to avoid other types of drinks. -
Say No to Grapefruit: Grapefruit and grapefruit-
containing foods can interfere with how your medicine works.
It's best to avoid them. -
Be Mindful with Certain Vitamins and Foods: Eating a lot of
fatty foods or taking fat-soluble vitamins
(like vitamins A, D, E, and K) can affect your medication.
Please talk it over with your healthcare team. -
Don't Stop Steroids on Your Own: If you're taking steroids,
don't stop them suddenly. Your doctor will guide you on
how to taper them off safely if needed. -
Vomiting? Take Action: If you throw up within an hour after
taking your medicine, you should retake the same dose.

Guard Against Infections: While on this medication,
your body is more vulnerable to infections. Be extra careful
and follow any advice given to you about preventing infections. -
Blood Test Days: If you're scheduled for a blood test
